Key Findings

Six data points that define the Indian tech salary market in 2026.

3–5×
FAANG vs IT services pay gap

A Senior SWE at Google/Amazon Bangalore earns ₹80–110L. The same title at TCS/Infosys earns ₹18–28L. Company type is the single biggest salary variable in Indian tech — larger than city, YoE, or skills.

₹12–15L
LLM skills premium at mid-level

ML engineers with LLM fine-tuning and RAG production experience earn ₹12–15L more than equivalent engineers without those skills. The largest skill premium we measured across any role in 2026.

40–70%
Automation QA premium over manual QA

Manual QA engineers earn ₹5–8L at mid-level. Automation QA engineers at the same experience earn ₹12–20L. AI testing tools are accelerating this divergence — manual testing as a standalone career is declining.

+18–25%
Bangalore premium over national median

Bangalore pays 18–25% above national median for senior and staff engineers. For freshers, the premium is smaller (10–12%). The real Bangalore advantage is access to Staff+ roles and equity-bearing positions — not just a salary bump.

2–3×
Salary growth after service-to-product switch

Engineers who switch from TCS/Infosys/Wipro to a product company within 4–6 years of experience report 2–3× salary increase within 2 years of the switch. The interview bar is higher; the return on investment is clear.

35%
Of senior CTC is non-cash

At the ₹50L+ band, approximately 35% of CTC is non-cash: ESOP/RSU, variable bonus, gratuity, and employer PF. In-hand salary for a ₹60L CTC is typically ₹3.2–3.6L/month — not ₹5L. Evaluate total comp, not just headline CTC.

City Premium — Software Engineer Benchmark

City premiums benchmarked against national median (₹22L for mid-level SWE). Effective monthly take-home estimated after median 1BHK rent near tech hubs.

The AI salary divide

ML Engineers with production LLM skills (RAG, fine-tuning, model serving) earn 35–50% more than those with only traditional ML experience. This is the fastest-widening skill premium we've measured in Indian tech. The supply of engineers who can take a model from prototype to production at scale remains acutely short — even with the surge in AI bootcamps and courses. Engineers with verifiable production deployments, not just Coursera certificates, capture the premium.

🏢

Company type beats everything else

The salary gap between IT services and product companies at the same experience level is 2–3× — and it is growing. A mid-level SWE at TCS earns ₹14–18L; the same profile at Swiggy or CRED earns ₹28–45L; at Google or Amazon India, ₹45–70L. No amount of skills, certifications, or years of experience in IT services closes this gap without a company switch. This is the single most impactful career variable for the majority of Indian software engineers.

🧪

Manual QA is declining — fast

AI-assisted testing tools are automating the repetitive test case generation and execution that manual QA engineers perform. The demand for pure manual testers has declined measurably in 2025–26. The salary data confirms it: manual QA stagnates at ₹5–8L at mid-level while automation QA reaches ₹12–20L. Engineers who have not yet developed Playwright, Python, or k6 skills should treat this transition as urgent — the window for a comfortable skill upgrade is narrowing.

🏙️

The Bangalore premium is real but misread

Bangalore pays 18–25% more than the national median — but the cost-of-living adjustment shrinks the effective gap. A ₹26L Bangalore salary leaves approximately ₹1.44L/month after a central 1BHK; a ₹22L Hyderabad or ₹20L Pune salary leaves ₹1.42L or ₹1.18L respectively. The real Bangalore advantage isn't the base salary premium — it's access: more Staff+ roles, more FAANG offices, more equity-bearing unicorn positions than all other Indian cities combined.

The Company-Type Gap

For a mid-level Software Engineer (3–5 YoE) in Bangalore. The same person, same experience — different company type.

₹12–18L
IT Services
TCS, Infosys, Wipro

Salary ceiling is low and predictable. Lateral moves within the sector offer minimal uplift.

₹22–38L
B2B SaaS
Freshworks, Zoho, Postman

Strong engineering culture. International product exposure. Moderate equity.

₹28–55L
Consumer Internet
Swiggy, CRED, Meesho

Real-scale product challenges. High ESOP upside at growth stage. Best career compounding.

₹45–80L
FAANG India
Google, Amazon, Microsoft

Highest base + RSU. Highest interview bar. Strong brand signal for future roles.

Methodology
